Intelligent and innovative transportation
systems (2009-2010)
The Flemish Government states in the “Flanders in Action Plan” its ambition to turn Flanders into an intelligent pivot system for transport and logistics within Europe. However, the economical and ecological burdens of the currently used transportation systems are very high (traffic jams, noise, stress, road accidents, air pollution,). The development and implementation of innovative ICT systems for strategic planning of the logistics and distribution of goods, in cooperation with surrounding countries and other member states of the European Union, could stimulate economical welfare and significantly reduce the overload caused by the existing transport systems in Flanders.
The Institute Society and Technology investigated the feasibility of this technology for a small urbanized region like Flanders with special emphasis on policy recommendations. The research group published the report “Eindrapport Intelligente transportsystemen” with the conclusions on the technical aspects, results of the survey on the acceptance by the public of the technology and the policy recommendations. At the request of the Mobility Committee of the Flemish Parliament a report on road pricing was also presented again covering the aspects technology, acceptance and policy.
